Salient Research Achievements
(in bullets)
  • Biochemical constituents of banana fruits / peel were analyzed for commercial varieties. High sugar and carbohydrate varieties were identified.
  • In Poovan, packing of ethrel treated fruits in 0.50% ventilated LDPE bags resulted in better postharvest quality.
  • ‘Sip-up’, a banana pulp based product was developed which stored up to 15 days at 0oC with consumer acceptance.
  • A reduction of 23-25 hours in drying time was achieved in different shapes (slices/dice/cubes) of banana by treating in sugar syrup, compared to whole fruits, which took 46.30 hrs for drying.
  • Ready to-eat/serve products and ‘Banana pulp based beverages’ were developed.
  • Banana male flower bud could be stored up to 10 days in 200 gauge polybags at 20oC.
Current Research
  • Development of Pre and Post Harvest Techniques for Leaf Production in Banana (PI)
  • Biochemistry of banana fruit ripening and characterization of high value compounds of fruit and flower (Co-PI)
  • Functions of resistant starch and designer food development from banana flour (Co-PI)
Current Research
  • Development of banana sucker paring equipment, pseudo-stem injector, bunch harvester and pseudo-stem outer sheath plate making equipment (CC-PI)
Area of Interest Postharvest technology in Horticultural Crops
